Samsung Galaxy A80 gets new software update, adds autofocus for selfie camera

Samsung Galaxy A80

A few days back, Samsung Galaxy A50 users started receiving new software updates with Android July security patch that was aimed at improvements and security fixes. Now, the South Korean smartphone maker is rolling out a new update for Galaxy A80 handsets over the air.

The latest firmware update carries build number A805FXXU2ASG7 and weighs 413MB in size. The firmware was originally released on July 22 with Security patch level to July 1, but Galaxy A80 handsets recently started receiving it via OTA update.

As we know, the Galaxy A80 features a pop-up camera setup that uses a rotation mechanism when taking photos with a selfie shooter or back camera. More specifically, its 48-megapixel camera is used for both selfies and back cameras. However, the 48MP main camera's autofocus feature seems to have been missing when used as a selfie shooter. Therefore, to fix this technical error, Samsung has released the said OTA update designed to add new autofocus functions.

Apart from adding new functionality to its camera, the firmware improves camera stability and device security. As far as phone security is concerned, it fixes the known-bugs till July 1 and will further be validated once new updates are released.

If you have not received A805FXXU2ASG7 firmware yet, you can access the device settings and manually check for updates. Once the check is completed, your phone will begin receiving it if the update is available to your Galaxy A80 before a broader rollout.

Chinese brands continue to set notable records in Indian smartphone market, Xiaomi topped with 28%

Indian smartphone market

Jan Vašek / Pixabay

In the second quarter (Q2) 2019, Chinese phone makers have set another record in the Indian smartphone market by shipping 37 million units which are larger than the previous shipments, Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service revealed yesterday.

Since the growth was based on new launches, price cuts on older devices and offline channel expansion across brands, Samsung's shipments declined by 7 percent year-over-year (YOY) due to not-launching new handsets compared to other smartphone makers. Samsung's shipment, however, remained growing due to the latest price cuts and the popularity of its A-series and M-series phones.

Xiaomi topped with 28% market share and grew to 6% over the previous year. Xiaomi's marketing strategy was primarily driven by portfolio expansion in the budget segment and expansion of the offline market. It also increased investment in the ATL/BTL campaigns and resulted in an increase in market share.

BBK Group-owned subsidiaries Oppo, Vivo, Realme and OnePlus grew 30% in the second quarter, becoming a leading smartphone maker in India with its combined share. Due to the popularity of Realme C2 phone and various discount offers, this device has been shown to reach 8 million smartphone shipments in the Indian market. The handset remained one of the best choices among the Indian consumers, the report reveals.

Huawei's trading ban seem to be affecting its market share in India, but the company succeeded in rising in the top 10 smartphone brand category, the reports read.

Brands focused on online as well as offline stores have set a noteworthy record. This indicates that offline channels play an important role in smartphone market share. As long as we understand, most people tend to buy new phones via offline stores. I the editor of PhoneSpeck live in a village. My 60% of neighbors choose to buy products via offline channels.

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Now, the South Korean smartphone maker Samsung has confirmed that its first foldable phone is getting ready to enter the selected markets in September 2019.

The Galaxy Fold's display failure reported in April led the company to delay its foldable phone. But at that time, Samsung cautioned that the "special protection layer" should not be removed to make the phone work without a problem. The Galaxy Fold is Samsung's first phone that has been under development for a long time since its initial release.

According to a report published on Samsung Newsroom, the improved version of this smartphone will be coming with many hardware improvements and additional features added during the development period. Apart from this, the device is now optimized for overall user experience i.e., foldable UX.

The company said in a statement that new protection caps added to the top and bottom of the hinge area will be strengthening the foldable hardware elements. Furthermore, metal layers added underneath the Infinity flex display have also been included as a screen protection feature. Not only the metal layer, but the space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced, the statement reads.

The new (improved phones) will only be launched in certain markets, and the remaining markets are said to hit by Galaxy fold in the next coming weeks. The United States, Korea, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and India will be the first countries where Galaxy Fold can be purchased from September.

Samsung sued by ACCC over promoting Galaxy phones deceptively

samsung

The South Korean tech giant Samsung has been sued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for allegedly carrying out deceptive advertisement techniques to represent various Galaxy phones in more than 300 ads, reports Reuters.

Samsung's local unit in Australia allegedly showed the water resistance features in Galaxy phones. The feature in question did not exist in the Galaxy phones and thus led the users to believe Samsung's advertisements, ACCC added. If the launched lawsuit against the local unit of Samsung proved to be true, the company might face multi-million dollar fines, reports multiple sources.

The instituted proceedings in the Federal Court against Samsung Australia reveals consumers damaged their phones when exposing the Galaxy handsets to water. It further states that Samsung had refused to honor warranty claims for the damaged phones.

Samsung on its website has stated that Samsung's Australian unit stands by its advertisement because the company complies with Australian law and advertising policies. The site further states that the company will defend the case in the Federal Court.

The ACCC's official website has added a screenshot of Samsung Australia's tweet that clearly shows that the company was engaged showing water-resist ads. The tweet confirms that Galaxy handsets were advertised in such way that represented the devices in a misleading manner.

The case background reveals the misrepresented device list ranging from Galaxy S-series to A-series. ACCC website has added S10e, S10, S10 Plus, S9, S9 Plus, S8, S8 Plus, S7, S7 Edge, Note 9, Note 8, Note 7, A8, A7, and A5 smartphones to the instituted proceedings. More importantly, the reputational damaged devices listed on the website are manufactured between 2016 to 2019, ACCC said.

Samsung Galaxy M30s spotted on Geekbench, sports Exynos 9610 SoC, 4GB RAM

Samsung Galaxy M30s

M.R Rony - Pixabay: Representational purpose only

The Samsung Galaxy M series has received a positive response from Indian customers, and now the South Korean smartphone giant is considering to introduce the M30s smartphone, involving previously launched M series.

Since the company has successfully crossed its M-series wave in the market, it will now debut the Galaxy M30s, leaving the mid-range handsets behind M10s and M20s. Samsung has successfully managed to sell more than 2 million M-series phones in countries where these phones were already launched.

The recent Geekbench listing suggests that Samsung could introduce an upgraded version of the M30 handset, which is said could be the M30s. No official announcement has been made so far.

If the reports are to be believed, the M30s could come with Exynos 9610 SoC chipset instead of Samsung Exynos 7. It means the performance of the upcoming device is more efficient and multi-core-powered.

The listing has revealed the device model number and operating system. It states the handset bearing number SM-M307F, Android 9 OS, and 4GB RAM. The Galaxy M30 has 4GB / 64GB of internal storage, so the memory mentioned on Geekbench makes us believe that the M30s could come with the same storage capacity for the standard variant.

M30 has a weaker CPU speed as compared to M30s. Since the phone is powered by Exynos 9610 SoC, it means the CPU speed of the upcoming device could be better than the old model. Listing has revealed that M30s processor is clocked at 1.74GHz.

As mentioned earlier, the phone is an upgraded version of the M series, so the new phone could come with a variety of firmware and hardware improvements, including camera, speaker, display touch sensitivity and more.

Samsung is ready to launch the Galaxy Fold, says display issues have been fixed

samsung galaxy fold

Samsung Galaxy Fold was unveiled on February 20, 2019, that was originally announced on April 26 in Europe. However, due to hardware issues with its display reported by the various tech-savvies and reviewers or whatever you call them, the company postponed the world's first foldable handset in order to fix the noted issues.

Earlier in May, Samsung CEO DJ Koh said in a statement that the company is working hard to make the necessary improvements in delayed handset. Now, another leader of Samsung's Display vice president, Kim Seong-Cheol, issued a new statement stating that the company has fixed most of the issues with Galaxy Fold display and the device is ready to hit the market. No exact date has been announced so far.

Better late than never – While reviewing past reports and announcements made by the South Korean giant, we believe the company is making permanent progress in its foldable phone.

Samsung might be aware of Google's z-shaped Foldable Pixel. Any further mistake could lead the company to lose consumers' trust in its foldable technology. And the possibility is that people can prefer to buy other handy devices than Samsung.
